The following poems were each inspired by two fleeting statements that whisked through my ears in my daily life, as blurry and brief as the faces of strangers and the towns you pass through in your travels. Sometimes, someone or someplace leaves an imprint on your mind, as these statements did for me. Enjoy :)
THE LAST WORD
"at least you got the last word in," they said.
if only they knew
how tragic a statement that was.
the last time she would ever speak
to somebody that she used to know.
a shadow of a word was all that was left
to seal the deal on their separate lives
that used to be so full of each other
and now meant nothing more than a stranger passing by.

i heard someone say they broke up
because she didn't make him happy anymore.
like it was somehow her fault
that she was a whole universe
and he was just a star.
