12/5/2020 2 Comments How I do eyeshadow eyelinerEver since going to college, my love for makeup has only continued to grow. What started out as my roommate and I doing eyeliner in our dorm on a Friday night led to me having the opportunity to do the makeup of my beautiful friends whenever an event sprung up, from sorority date nights to Halloween. That's why I chose "resplendent" as the word for this article -- my friends are resplendent in appearance with or without makeup! Getting to practice makeup more often nowadays has allowed me time to experiment with new looks. In the past, I always struggled with a darker eyeshadow or eyeliner look. Having hooded eyelids made me feel like everything I did either shrunk or overwhelmed my eyes. However, I have finally figured out a way to accomplish a darker, yet subtle look for hooded eyes, with the help of black eyeshadow as eyeliner. Here is my step-by-step guide to how I do eyeshadow eyeliner! 1. Find A Small, Stiff Angled Brush My favorite brush to use when applying eyeshadow as eyeliner is a small, stiff(!), angled brush because it helps to pack the shadow on while keeping your application controlled and precise. The brush I use is from Elf Cosmetics, and while I cannot find the exact one, I linked a similar style here. And it's only $4! 2. Apply Black Eyeshadow Like Eyeliner Pack a black eyeshadow onto your brush and begin dragging the brush along your lash line as if you were applying regular eyeliner. I use the shade "Blackout" from the Urban Decay Naked 2 Eyeshadow Palette, linked here. You can obviously apply as thick or as thin of a line as you like depending on your eye shape and preference. I prefer to create more of a baby wing to avoid overwhelming the outside of my eyes. If I'm making a longer "wing," I use tape along the outside of my eye to keep the shadow contained and to create a more precise line. 3. Blend The "Eyeliner" Out Now that you've created your faux eyeliner, take a larger shadow brush to diffuse the shadow a bit and smoke out your look. I use the eyeshadow blending brush from the bH Cosmetics Sculpt and Blend 2 Set, linked here (the whole set is only $10.50!). This is the best part of eyeshadow eyeliner -- you can't mess it up! It's easy to blend out if you want to smooth over any errors in application. Sometimes I like to add a barely-there brown shadow to my brush while blending out the black shadow just to add a bit more dimension and color. 4. Add The "Eyeliner" to Your Bottom Lash Line Now that you're done with the shadow for your eyelid, it's time to add some to your bottom lash line. Focusing on just the outer 3/4ths to half of your bottom lash line, add a black line, connecting it to the "eyeliner" on your lid. Make sure to not put the shadow on your waterline, but just below it, as close to the lash line as possible. 5. Smudge It Out! It's time to get a little hands on! I always use my fingers for this step to make the blend easier. Taking my ring finger to be more gentle, I rub my finger along the line of eyeshadow I just drew, smudging it out. This step will make the line less severe and blend your look together. 6. Add *Actual* Eyeliner This step is my favorite! Adding eyeliner to your waterline really brings the look together. Since you're applying the eyeliner to your waterline, you do not want to use a liquid or felt-tip eyeliner. Instead, I use a soft, pencil-like retractable liner by Pati Dubroff. Although I could not find the exact one, I linked a similar product by NYX here. Note that the eyeliner is not a typical pencil liner that has to be sharpened, as that would be too harsh on your eye. Instead, the liner is a softer, more crayon-like consistency. I apply this liner on my upper and lower waterlines, the lower being the most crucial. Oftentimes, my eyes may water slightly during this step because of the liner's proximity to my eye, so it may be helpful to have a couple tissues on hand to blot your eyes just in case. After applying the liner to my upper and lower waterlines, I add a bit to my inner corners by lining the small triangle shape in the corner of my eyes, keeping the liner as close to my eye as possible. Add a little mascara and you're done (my go-to for years has been Covergirl Clump Crusher)! I hope you enjoyed the article and that these steps helped you in creating your own eyeshadow eyeliner look!
